Group Songwriting and Production
Welcome to Group Songwriting and Production! This class explores the process of creating a song from beginning to end, starting with crafting simple melodies, then creating lyrics, chords, basslines and drums/percussion.
We also explore more technical parts of the music making experience, including song forms, rhyme schemes, scales/music theory, reading music, and music production, with in-depth discussion and examples.
This class is open to students who have some prior musical experience, but also those who have more limited experience but are interested in learning. This class is best taken on a desktop or laptop computer, and will be taught over Zoom.
The first 6 weeks of the class will focus on collaborating to write a song together, and the final 8 weeks will focus on students writing their own songs. Students will be able to work in Garageband or Soundtrap to complete their project.
This 14 week class culminates in a Zoom recital of the songs we’ve written for friends and family.
Classes are 2 hours, and take place from 10AM-12PM EST on Tuesdays and 4-6PM EST on Fridays on Zoom. The class is intended for students aged 12-18. Classes start the first week of October, and run until the end of January. Additional sections of this class may be added later to accommodate students who are not available during the Tuesday and Friday class times above.
The class costs $560 for the 14 week session. For reference for the IHIP and quarterly reports for the state of New York, this class counts for 1/4 Credit per semester taken, or 28 hours. This class is eligible to count towards music requirements for other states.
